The Half Speed treatment didn''t do this record any favors

I''ve owned approximately 6 copies of this LP in my life, with 4 bought used - the original 1980 Rolling Stones Records pressed by Atlantic/WB - 1 Columbia remaster/reissue, and now the Half Speed LP. I also own this on a 1994 remastered CD. The original Atlantic pressings always sounded muffled and dull - on all tracks. The Columbia was a recut and it sounded brighter - the music actually coming alive. That copy I bought new/sealed - old stock. it did not contain the poster, but since the sound was better, I didn''t care much. So you can imagine my high expectations and my great disappointment when I played the half speed mastered new release. The sound is as dull as the Atlantic pressings, but a bit "smoother" and "warmer" than the Columbia. However, I still wanted a bit more brightness from the sound, especially considering that this was mastered from the original tapes, at Abbey Road, etc.... I love the music, but the mastering leaves much to be desired.

This came out around May/June of 1980, and was the album that caught my attention as a teenager. Turned me onto the Stones, and made me a life long fan. There''s only one dud ( " Indian Girl " ) on the whole album. It is a great Summer record ( blast this by your swimming pool on a warm sunny day along with the soundtrack to " The Harder they Come ", " Born To Run " and " Pet Sounds " ). " Let Me Go ", " Where The Boys Go ", " Summer Romance ", " She''s So Cold "....so many great tracks that never get the airplay they deserve. My only complaint is that they didn''t include the original poster that came with the album ( it''s now reduced to just a few pictures used as the jacket ). One of their last truly "classic" albums.

Some of the reviews seem to regard "Emotional Rescue" as one of the Rolling Stones'' weaker albums. However, I''m not getting that vibe at all. In fact, it fits in very nicely with "Some Girls" and "Tattoo You" as part of a trio of some of the band''s best rocking albums.
Disco was still raging, but even so, the opener "Dance" is still very catchy and sets the tone for a rollicking set. In addition to "Dance", you have a small foray into reggae as well, but the title track and the great rock and roll song "She''s So Cold" help keep the pace going, with Ron and Keith''s gritty guitars showing everybody what really good rock and roll guitar is all about, and a surprise at album''s end, where Keith gets the last song, a jazzy (almost) tune with some sophisticated playing and even some real harmony vocals.
Like fans especially love the era from "Beggars Banquet" through "Goat''s Head Soup", this trio is equally enjoyable, straight ahead rock and roll like a million bands WISH they could do as well as Mick, Keith and company.

The title track is the most week known on this album, however Dance (part 1) is by far my favorite. The disco style is awesome. I’m also a fan I Indian Girl even though a lot of critics decry it. This is great album in vinyl- I highly recommend it.
